Sustaining Process Excellence: Karate or Jiu Jitsu?

Blog, Joseph Rayfield
When it comes to optimizing any process over the long haul, anything short of complete automation pretty much leaves the door open to backsliding - otherwise known as "reverting back to old behaviour. The bane of many a COO’s existences of course. I’m a sucker for analogies, I see them around every corner. So allow me to share my thinking here. In martial arts, the age-old debate of technique versus strength has always plagued its practitioners. While Karate and Jiu-Jitsu are both martial arts, their Modus operandi is quite different. A Karate practitioner applies force directly and often, whilst Jiu-Jitsu emphasizes the effectiveness of proper technique over strength. When I think of organisations and their quest for Process Excellence, I often feel that they take a “karate” like approach to process optimization. There’s…

The Key to Solving Patient Throughput Efficiency: 100% Process Visibility

The Key to Solving Patient Throughput Efficiency: 100% Process Visibility

Blog, Healthcare, Scott Opitz
Throughput is a core factor when it comes to bending the healthcare cost curve – whether by reducing readmissions, increasing access to care or by driving better service quality. It’s also a metric than can be fraught with complications when we expand focus from a single specific service area to processes that span multiple service areas becoming increasingly more common in the era of longitudinal patient care. Of course, process complexity itself has a direct and substantial impact on the ability to both understand and optimize throughput in any scenario. Consider the challenges posed by a process’ scope such as orderly and efficient patient flow, timely processing of a lab test or the reading of an X-Ray, accurately processing a claim -- or the performance of many hundreds of other processes…

The Pillar of Intelligent Process Mining: Analytics

The Pillar of Intelligent Process Mining: Analytics

Blog, Joseph Rayfield
In my last article, I made the case that Intelligent Processing Mining presents us with the “Easy Button” for generating process intelligence. A key aspect of that argument is the role that process-centric analytics play. Analytic tools help sift, compare, and combine data into an understandable context that facilitates insight into cause and effect. Conventional analytics, when applied to the simpler data sets typically presented by “isolated” process steps, certainly help make information actionable. However, as we shift from simpler use cases to more complex data sets that characterize multi-step business processes, the design and variety of process-optimized analytics become critically important. What may not be as evident is that the underlying methodology used to aggregate and organize the data directly affects how easy it will be for analytics to…

How We Got From Business Intelligence to Process Intelligence

How We Got From Business Intelligence to Process Intelligence

Blog, Ryan Raiker
Digital Transformation is everywhere and now you can see your process in action Businesses have goals to achieve and numerous objectives to accomplish. It could be the delivery of products or the offering of services. It could be the transformation of raw materials into parts that create a final product. It could even be the procedures for financial transactions for purposes of budgeting and financial management. The accomplishment and achievement of these goals and objectives require the performance of a task or activity, or a series of tasks and activities. These sets of activities or tasks, which are logically related and often follow a logical flow, are referred to as business processes. The day-to-day operations of businesses and organizations, regardless of their nature, structure, and even the industry they belong to,…

The Easy Button to Process Enlightenment!

Blog, Joseph Rayfield
I’ve already introduced the fact that process intelligence exists and riffed on the top ten reasons you need it. So if you’ll indulge me, I’d like to focus this discussion on why I think a timeline methodology turns plain old process mining into Intelligent process mining. As it turns out, that’s actually simpler than you may think. In fact, I can sum it up in one phrase: It’s the Easy Button. No – really! I know the phrase is overused but let's face it; software can be pretty complicated, so "easy" wins every time. When you streamline and automate process discovery, display processes in intuitive ways, and then simplify how you query and filter to look for answers – that qualifies as the Easy button in my book. I know – you want the detail…

The Top 10 Reasons you need Intelligent Process Mining

Blog, Joseph Rayfield
My last article (“Process Intelligence Exists!”) introduced the incredibly powerful process insight technology that leverages existing IT systems to reveal how business processes really operate.  It exposes process “blindspots” , and makes it easy for virtually anyone to figure out whats going right – or whats going wrong.  Every time I show somebody this capability for the first time, thier answer is always punctuated by the exclamation - “I had no idea!” But lets give credit where credit is due: It was advanced Business Intelligence tools that  introduced the idea that anyone – not just analysts - could develop actionable information with the right application.  Sophisticated, easy to use dashboards and analytics introduced a bunch of new ways to look at data. But BI has one key drawback – it’s designed…

Banks’ processes: From ATMs to block chain, where will they go next?

Blog, Financial Services, RPA, Ryan Raiker
Over the past several years we have seen a plethora of organizations adopt approaches to improving the quality and efficiency of their output. Some of these have included: Business Process Re-engineering, Lean, Six Sigma, Business Process Management, Business Performance Improvement, and many more. Every one of these methodologies focus on one thing: PROCESS! This focus on process level improvement is about improving the way that businesses create and deliver value to the customer. Although the focus is on the process, the goal is to try to change the way that people within a company work and behave. Organization is a good way to execute processes well. The best BPM enabler is metrics from process and workflow (i.e. asking “how well are we doing”, “are we meeting our goals”, “are our customers…

The Consultant’s Role in “Process Enterprises”

Blog, Ryan Raiker
Consulting companies offer many services such as management, audit, tax, technology, and strategy consulting. However, Business Process Management (BPM) consulting might come from any one of these management, technology, or strategy firms. By engaging a consulting firm, you get access to a group of professionals that have numerous skills like process design, process improvement, leadership and accreditation ranging from Lean Six Sigma Black Belts, Project Management Professional certifications, licenses, and more. These highly specialized people would be expensive to hire full time, but thanks to consultants, companies can bring in these specialists on demand. Planning, mapping, and maintaining quality process improvements are crucial to the success of businesses today. Businesses have been focusing on reshaping processes for many years now. Process Intelligence Exists!

Blog, Joseph Rayfield
Just recently, I found myself reading an article on my iPad, in the back of an Uber, listening to Spotify, while wondering if consumer technology was passing me by.  During the ride, my wife sent me a selfie on snap chat and offered to Venmo me for our Netflix subscription. I didn’t know whether to be excited or offended! The article focused on recent technologies that have changed the world we live in – those that didn’t even exist 10 years ago. I will say without embarrassment I was only familiar with about 60% of them, but use most of those at least once a week, a few on a daily basis. What’s undeniable is  the common thread: they are extremely easy to use, they help make my life less complicated, and…
